If anyone has any tips on swimming (competitively), please let me know! One of the CF FX TX competition WOD's (this saturday) consists of a swim and though I can, that doesn't mean that I can efficiently.

I don't know what the events are yet, but they did make us aware of the swim.

I used to swim... wow thats kind of shocking. Where will the swim take place? Do you have access to a gym to practice?

Candice just move your arms and legs as fast as possible without breathing. Thats how I swim :)

Thanks guys!

Alexis, I have no idea! I have never been to their box so I am unsure what they have, but apparently they have water somewhere. I am thinking about talking to 24 hour fitness so I can move around a little tomorrow in the water. I have never swam a race. It has always been with cammies, boots, and a helmet on for Marine mumbo jumbo, but other than that, leisure.

Candice,

I am not sure what you are up against but I will tell you what I know as a former swimmer that did over 5,000 yards a day.

1. If you can, use goggles. Find a pair that will stick to your eyes with out the band (push them into you eye and they should make a vacuum). If they do, thats a good pair. Buy them (then use the band).

2. Find a breathing pattern that works for you. Don't breath on every stroke. I use to breath every third stroke so I was breathing left and right.

3. Reach out far and pull straight down the centerline of you body keeping you hands in close and all the way to the hip. Just like rowing, the further your pull is the more ground you will cover. If you arms move like a windmill, it ain't right.

4. This is very VERY important. Make absolutely sure that you only inhale AIR. Water doesn't work out so well. Considering that you will be more than likely doing something else (it is crossfit!), sucking in water will certainly bring the cookies to the surface.

Hope that helps and Good Luck!

Candice-
I used to swim competitively all the way through high school... Its all about posture in the water. you can move your arms and legs as fast as they can go but if you don't have good body awareness and posture in the water you're just wasting a lot of energy. Holler if you want me to show you whats up...

Candice,
I have a book called "The Guide to Fishlike Swimming" by Terry Laughlin. Basically helps you to understand how to put your body in the water so you reduce drag. Positioning is everything. You don't want to be working hard. I can leave the book with Chris at the front desk if you are interested.

i used to do triathlons. done lots of swimming. since i would imagine that you'll be doing some other movement or movements that will gas you in addition to swimming, breathing will be everything. breath every other stroke. that means your head will turn all rights or lefts. it also means you exhale through your nose when your face is in the water. you may know that but i didn't when first started out. just swam like trevor and died out quickly. don't listen to trevor.

Wow! Thank you guys! I will def be reading the blog over and over to try to remember all of this. Bob, you don't have to, but if your heading up to the gym anyway, that would be pretty sweet to look over so I have a better understand of everything. :)
