Since that's my bald head in the picture I thought I would give some of my experiences with max efforts. It was fairly straightforward in powerlifting. In a meet you would work up to a max effort (push or pull the most weight possible) on that day. As an aside, best training results came from submaximal gym efforts. I would leave a rep or two in the tank or some weight off the bar. This allowed me to increase the weight or reps the next week.
Track was a little different animal. I could only give a sustained maximal effort on distances up to 400 meters. And in the 400, only when at my peak cardio shape. Anything over that distance and pace was of utmost importance. If I wanted a good time, I would go out fast and try to hang on. If I wanted to win, I had to run a smart race. The times might only vary by a couple of seconds (over an 800-1600 meter race), but the difference was huge between finishing strong or dying. I haven't figured out X-fit metcons yet. Sorry for the long post.
